Mr. Al. Ramanathan

Mr. AL. Ramanathan, the adopted son of Dr. Alagappa Chettiar had his schooling at Alagappa Model High School in Karaikudi. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Zoology from Alagappa Arts College, Karaikudi. As an avid sports enthusiast he played cricket with a passion. He was successful in establishing a factory in Trichy to manufacture abrasives.

In 1965 married Unnamalai, the daughter of Dr.(Mrs.) Umayal Ramanathan. He is the proud father of a son and a daughter. He honoured his foster father by christening his son after the late Dr. RM. Alagappa Chettiar. The young Alagappan has fulfilled his father's dreams by qualifying creditably as a physician specializing Orthopaedics. He is a workaholic like his father and desires to serve his native land through his noble profession. He has a clear-cut vision like his great grandfather to serve humanity.

Mr. A.L. Ramanathan's daughter, Lakshmi is the administrator of the Umayal Play School and Day Care Center housed in the Alagappa School campus in Chennai. She is married to Mr. Narayanan, a Textile Engineer. Mr. A.L. Ramanathan takes pride in his grandson's birthday on 6th April, which strangely coincides with the birthday of the great Dr. Alagappa Chettiar.

It is his firm conviction to return to Tamil Nadu and set up an industry in the area of biotechnolgy and follow the footsteps of his grandfather, Dr. RM Alagappa Chettiar to further the cause of education and at the same time integrate industry with the institutions to come up with innovative research and academic programs to bring fame not only to the Alagappa institutions but also to the state of Tamil Nadu.

Married in 1977 to Alagu they have 3 children. Anita the eldest is in the final year of medicine at Ramachandra Medical College in Madras. Their son Anand is studying pre-medicine with a major in Neuroscience at Baylor University in Texas and Devi their youngest daughter, a talented singer is studying in the 10th Std in the US..
